Mahlstedt Ranch Cows

Our cow herd comes from a Hereford base developed over 6 generations ago.  We've AIed to what we considered to be the top Salers bulls for over 20 years and have purchased bulls from select breeders to get the Salers herd we have today.  Replacement heifers are retained from our own herd.  The word people use to describe our cattle is "fancy".  We strive to raise good-looking, top quality, functioning cattle.

Some of our purebred Salers cows have been bred to Angus bulls.  This has been done via AI and herd sires purchased from Armstrong Angus Ranch which focuses heavily on strong maternal traits and tight sheathed bulls.  These 1/2 blood bulls are popular and the heifers are excellent mothers.

Disposition is always important to us so we watch this closely and cull any animals that are not quiet.  Truth be told, we truly enjoy working with these cows because they move nicely for sorting and working and they graze all of the pasture rather than sitting in low areas.

Calving ease is such a plus with Salers.  Once we crossed to this breed, we were able to quit doing pelvic measurements on heifers because they just naturally have a wider opening.  Along with this, the calves are streamline shaped and have a will to live.
